Floral Monogram

The only thing we managed to finish in Mary’s nursery before she was born was painting the walls and her dresser. Now that she’s 2 and the next one is half baked I figured it was time I stepped it up and put together some art for her room. I came up with this idea about a year ago when I found a fancy pack of ladybug brads but they disappeared into the black hole of my sisters car. A recent trip to Michael’s revealed that they have all of their scrap booking brads on clearance (no lady bugs though) so it seemed time to finally put together the floral monogram I had planned for her room.

This is another one of those projects that seems like a lot more work than it is. It’s also one that you need to take quite a bit of creative license to make it your own.

Supplies:

  • Canvas (mine was ~14×16 but I lost my ruler and the packaging was gone so I’m not completely sure)
  • Pencil
  • Paint, back ground + green for the letter (blue would make the most sense for the outside but since Mary has blue walls I went with light green) & Brush
  • Fake Flowers with removable center
  • Scrapbook Brads with fancy centers (I used one and a partial pack of the giant (12 in each pack) rhinestone brads in the roses and most of another pack of smaller rhinestones, there were 40 in that pack)
  • Small nail or Awl

Instructions:

  1. Roughly trace out your letter, make sure you don’t go over the frame or you won’t be able to pop your flowers through
  2. Paint the whole canvas outside of the letter,  including the sides. Let dry and paint the inside of the letter green. Let dry.Decorate you walls with a bright and lively DIY Floral Monogram crafted on stretched canvas with fancy scrap booking brads
  3. Start disassembling your flowers by removing them from the stems. Toddlers will do this with glee.Decorate you walls with a bright and lively DIY Floral Monogram crafted on stretched canvas with fancy scrap booking brads
  4. Pull the plastic ‘cap’ off the back of the flower and remove the hard plastic center. Push a brad through the flowers and add the plastic cap, the bend in the plastic keeps the flower petals from laying flat. I started with the large flowers and set them on the canvas as I went to estimate how many I needed. Keep going until you think you have enough flowers, you don’t but that’s ok. I ended up using two bunches of large roses, a bunch of small yellow roses, a bunch of small green flowers and a mixed bunch of purple and pink rose buds. Bonus tip: If your flowers seem too flat combine the petals from two into one flower. I’ve got a pretty good break down on my Jingle Bell Flower Wreath.
  5. Now it’s time for assembly. Use the nail or awl to poke a small home in the canvas, push the brad through and open up the back flat against the canvas. And that’s it. I added leaves to some of the flowers to fill up some of the empty space (I removed all the plastic from the leaves and just slipped them on the brad after the plastic cap). The letter is painted green so if a tiny bit shows it’s not the end of the world. 6. Keep adding flowers, one bonus to the brad is you can remove, re-position and spin the flowers without the problems you’d have with a hot glue gun. I think it’s easiest to add all the big flowers and then fill in with the small ones

Mary’s room was originally done with a Peter Rabbit theme but it’s evolved into a more general garden theme. I can’t wait to get a few more projects done for her room hopefully before she turns 4 😉

This is such a fun idea! I love the garden theme for a young girl. So pretty but will still grow with her.
