11 Potato Soup Recipes

Fill your bowl with one of these hearty soups featuring everyone's favorite tubers

Last winter I wanted fresh, season appropriate salads. This year all I want is a hot steamy bowl of soup, and what better to star as the leading lady than the potato? This collection includes the standard white potato and (my favorite) the sweet potato! Pick up your soup spoon and get ready to dig in. [Read more…]

Why I Don’t Start Onions from Seed

Forget the heat mats & grow lights, get a great onion harvest without starting from seed

We are big onions lovers in this house, each year I devote an entire 4x14ft garden bed to the allium family. One half is fall planted garlic and shallots and the rest is filled with onions come spring time. Last year I had a separate 4×4 bed for leeks, I’m not sure where they’re going this year becuase that bed is supposed to be horseradish but you can bet I’ll find a place for them! [Read more…]

Social Media Run Down

I want you all to know that I love you. It’s an incredible feeling to know that there are people out there, most that I’ll never meet, that come to my little piece of the internet to see what I have to say and look at pictures of my alpacas. I know that life can be crazy and it’s not always easy to keep up with everything. In order to make it easier I thought I’d share all the places you can find me on social media:

Visit Alecia @ ChickenScratch NY’s profile on Pinterest.

Out of all the social media outlets this is where I am busiest. I pin all sorts of things, I’m on over 180 boards. BUT a lot of those are group boards and if you decide to follow my entire profile you won’t be automatically signed up for those. I pin all of my posts to my Chicken Scratch NY Board, that’s probably the best place to keep up will all the new things going on here. I’ve been pinning a lot to my Garden and Outside Beautification board lately, it’s full of gorgeous flower gardens and outdoor DIYs. Another board I’ve been getting back to is my #Grow Gourmet Board. If you’re interested in growing your own food it’s the place to be, I’ve got a few other awesome bloggers helping me with it so you’ll get another perspective than just mine. If you’re looking for more seasonal crafting I’ve got a lot for you to see, everything from Valentine’s Day and Spring, to Halloween, Fall and Christmas. I’ve also got oodles of recipe boards; my most popular board is all about Pumpkin Recipes, other favorites include my Desserts Board and my board for Food from the Farm, featuring fresh seasonal ingredients.

Facebook – Chicken Scratch NY

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that Facebook doesn’t show you a third of what you follow. But just case you should be following me 😉 I share all my new posts along with lots of stuff from other bloggers that I love. This month I’m sharing a few of my favorite bloggers garden related pinterest boards. The one thing I love about FB is that I’m not always just talking to my self. It’s the main place where to get to talk to you!

Instagram – AleciaCSNY

I just joined instagram a few months ago. If you’re interested in random pictures of my dog, cats, chickens and whatever I’ve got growing in the garden or cobbling together in the craft room this is a great place to follow me. I’m sadly pretty erratic with my posting but I try to share something a few times a month.

Twitter – AleciaCSNY

Twitter is my blogging kryptonite. I’m really bad at tweeting. I just recently figured out how to get my Instagram pics to share to twitter so if you you don’t use IG but you do use twitter you can see all my random pictures there

Food Safe Wood Conditioning Cream

Protect your wooden cutting boards, bowls and spoon with food safe DIY wood conditioning cream
I’ve been noticing my wooden spoons getting sadder and sadder. We don’t run them through the dishwasher, which can do some serious damage to wood, but eventually hand washing will take it’s toll. I’d seen quite a few wood conditioning creams online (ok, on Pinterest) but they all required mineral oil. I’m not sure about you but mineral oil in not on my list of things to eat more off this year.  [Read more…]

Fred & George – Pet Alpacas

Find out what our two pet alpacas do on our small farm
I talk a big game about making the farm work for us. The apparent weak link in all of that is the alpacas. We don’t do anything with the fiber, they’re usually very dirty by the time we shear them and I don’t spin any way. The poultry all serve the purpose of insect control, eggs and meat. I’m sure as heck not going to eat the alpacas, so what do we keep them for? [Read more…]
